Dealing with livestock
A number of members have expressed concerns in respect of passing through fields containing livestock, particularly cattle, a recent article in ‘Walk’ offered the following advice.
It’s important to be mindful of livestock, particularly during springtime when animals will be rearing young. The Countryside Code contains some basic tips to follow :-
Do not get between cows and their calves.
Be prepared for cattle to react to your presence, they are naturally curious.
Move quickly and quietly in one compact group through the field, around the herd if possible.
If they do follow you, just walk quietly on, if charged do not panic or run, cattle will normally stop before they reach you.
Don’t put yourself at risk, if you feel threatened find another way round and rejoin the footpath as soon as possible.
